Hot Dog! Keeping Your Pup Cool in the Houston Heat

Summer is here, and our canine friends are feeling the tropical vibes, too! Here are some tips on how to keep your dog cool and healthy during the hot and humid summer months.

Keep Walks Short

Your dog’s paw pads are just as sensitive as your bare feet would be, so keep your walks short to avoid burning your companion’s feet. Try walking your dog on grassy or gravel paths rather than on concrete or gravel trails if possible.

Provide Plenty of Water

Make sure your pup always has access to plenty of fresh water. (Bonus – he won’t go looking to drink out of the toilet when he thinks you’re not watching.)

Limit Car Time

It gets very hot, VERY fast in a parked car, even with the windows left open. If you can, leave your dog home when running errands.

Provide an Elevated Bed

Consider providing your dog with an elevated cooling bed. Much like a camping cot, these simple beds have short legs that elevate your dog off the floor or ground, allowing air to circulate beneath them.
